Fazil Marija will lead the Sri Lankan national men’s Seven’s rugby team for the upcoming Asian Seven’s series second leg in Thailand on September 26 and 27.

Regular captain Marija could not participate in the first leg in China due to an injury, where his absence was felt both as captain and player.

Some new talented players of the calibre of CR & FC’s speedy three quarters Rochana Hettiarachchi, Kavindu Perera along with dashing forward Jason Dissanayake has been named in the pool along with experienced Navy SC player Dinusha Chathuranga in the 19-man squad from which the final 12 will be selected.

Hettiarachchi was adjudged as the up and coming player of the just concluded, inter-club sevens tournament and played really well in the recently concluded Mercantile 7’s tournament as well.

Players like Jason Dissanayaka, Dinusha Chathuranga, Rehan Thygarajah and Nigel Ratwatte, who have previous experience in representing Sri Lanka in many overseas sevens tours, will be an added advantage for Sri Lanka.

“We are glad that Marija had recovered quickly and will be able to lead the side in Thailand. We are also happy to see the return of experienced players like Jason Dissanayaka, Rehan Thygarajah, Dinusha Chathuranga and Nigel Ratwatte,” said Michael Jayasekara, chairman of selectors.

“These players have represented the country on many overseas tournaments before and thereby have a lot of experience behind them. We hope this time we will come up with a good performance and improve our ratings,” he added.

In the first leg of the Asian Sevens played in China last week, Sri Lanka finished fourth behind Japan, China and South Korea.
