The Jeep Wrangler Southern Night Rally (formerly known as the Southern Monsoon Rally) organized for the 17th successive year by Southern Motor Sports Club is to take place this Friday and Saturday. The Rally which is run as a Time, Speed, Distance (TSD) is to commence from Matara opposite Sanath Jayasuriya Stadium at 7p.m.

This year too, the organizers have made plans for the participants to make their way through the wilderness of the Southern Province covering a distance of 450 kilo metres. While driving through this challenging track all competitors are sure to encounter the thrills expected from this sort of rallying. Most of the participants are drivers who have taken part in this Rally which they consider as the best rally organized in Sri Lanka. These details were disclosed at a briefing held at the Olympic House on Wednesday.

This is the only night rally organized as a TSD rally which is considered by all Motor Racing fraternity as one of the best events in the motor racing calendar in Sri Lanka. But the biggest problem the organizers are faced with is limiting the number of participants due to time factor. Every year the event has seen an increase in the number of entries but this year the organizers are compelled to limit the number to 40 on the first come first served basis. It was stated that up to last Monday the Club had received 36 entries including women competitors.

The women’s category is the latest addition to this Jeep Wrangler Rally 2015. The Rally will be run on two stages. The first from Matara to Galle where the drivers and co-drivers are billed to cover a distance of 220 kilometres. The second stage is to commence from Galle after a break of two hours and the participants will finish off in Matara in the morning of Saturday.

The Jeep Wrangler Night Rally is sponsored by the Diesel & Motor Engineering Company (DIMO) the sole distributor for the ‘JEEP’ in Sri Lanka for the second successive year. The Rally will be conducted under four categories namely Novices, Professional (Rally Prepared Cars, Non Rally Prepared cars) and the Women’s Category. All winners and runners-up will be rewarded after the completion of the second stage at Matara on Saturday.
