In the curtain raiser of the West Asian Club Rugby Championship, Olymp RFC Kazakhstan held the formidable Kandy Sports Club to a thrilling 35-all draw in Dubai on Saturday night. At lemons Kandy SC led 28-22.
The Kandy SC took the field without their regular skipper Fazil Marija due to injury; hence they were a dejected outfit. In his absence Arshad Jamaldeen (son of former Police SC and Sri Lankan fly half Nizam Jamaldeen) played as fly half.
Kandy scored their points through 2 goals, 3 tries and 2 penalties. Olymp RFC Kazakhstan scored 1 goal, 5 tries and 1 penalty.
Tongan national Koto Pongi and Kenyan national Oscar Ouma spearheaded most of the Kandy SC tries, while the two conversions and the two penalties were put over by fly half Arshad Jamaldeen and full back Thilina Wijesinghe accordingly.
Kandy will play Abu Dhabi Saracens tomorrow September 15.
