While the prevailing wet weather conditions are due to subside within the next two days, rains are again likely to pour in the coming weeks as per the Southwestern monsoon, the Department of Meteorology stated.

Speaking to The Nation, Duty Meteorologist Nadee Rupasinghe confirmed that during this time heavy rains and thunder will have to be expected in the evening, and that the Southwestern monsoon will be succeeded by the inter-monsoonal period towards the end of September.

Meanwhile, the Department has issued a warning on its website urging citizens to “take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning.” Heavy traffic was reported on several roads in and around Colombo on Friday due to the rainy weather.
