When the new sports minister Dayasiri Jayasekera took office on Monday he said that it was his happy day as two Sri Lankan athletes won silver medals at the Commonwealth Youth Games held in Samoa.
He went on to say that this was the hard work done by the previous sports ministers and that he was happy to note that sports will turn to the better under his regime in the future.
“I am not new to sports. I have been in touch with sports and engaged in sports activities on a daily basis. I still play cricket and this helps me to maintain my physical fitness,” said the minister.
Most importantly minister Jayasekera said that his urgent task is to resolve the existing confusion regarding the sports law that has become a hindrance to progress in sports. Sri Lanka has been faced with a serious problem in relationship with international sports controlling bodies in recent times. The reason being that the sports law of Sri Lanka does not fall in line with the requirements of international laws.
“We should maintain a balance between the local sports law and the required law by the International Governing Body. We should work together with the international organizations. I will try to solve these problems by introducing new laws as quickly as possibly,” confirmed minister Jayasekera. (TBR)
