The Asian Cricket Academy under-15 and under-13 teams performed extremely well in the recently concluded All-island MCA Anchor inter academy junior cricket tournament. The under-15 side captained by Saffan Samadh of Zahira College Colombo reached the semi-finals of the tournament where they lost to MCA Cricket Academy by eight runs on the net run rate.
They won all their first round matches beating Lankans Cricket Academy, RPC Cricket Academy, KA Cricket Academy, HR Cricket Academy and Homagama Cricket Academy. In the quarter-finals they beat Kirindiwala Cricket Academy before losing to MCA Cricket Academy in the semis.
Outstanding performances came from vice-captain Kavishka Lakshan (best all-rounder), Miranga Madushan (best bowler), Dineth Gayashan, Aabid Naushad, Kavindu Umayanga, Saffan Samadh, Mohamed Rifath, Mohamed Imthiyas, Bhagya Ediriweera, Heshan Dilhara, Chamod Battage, Ravindu Sachintha, Pavan Bimsara and Akmal Naushad.
The under-13 team won three out of five matches losing to SSC Cricket Academy and Sanath Jayasuriya Cricket Academy. Among those who shone for the team were the captain Rafique Samadh from Zahira College Colombo, vice-captain Isuru Kavinda from St. Joseph’s College Enderamulla, Rafique Samadh as wicket-keeper/batsman, Ovin Nuhansith (off spin), Rasindu Diaz (batting), Namith Gimsara (leg-spin), Isuru Kavinda, Mohamed Mushfiq, Ometh Thinula, Tharindu Rajapaksha, Shenila Chamath, Malshika Fernando and Abeetha Pulithkutige.
“Our aim is to teach these players how to develop their techniques, skills, game sense, discipline and respect what we have learnt from our coaches Lionel Mendis and Nelson Mendis,” said Asian Cricket Academy head coach Safraz Farook who is assisted by Udara Maddumage and Janith Dissanayaka.
