The Western and Wayamba (North Western) Provincial Councils have received new Chief Ministers after the posts were vacated by the former chief ministers who were elected to Parliament on August 17 General Election. Accordingly, Isura Devapriya has been appointed Chief Minister of Western Province and Darmasiri Dassanayake has been appointed as the Chief Minister of Wayamba Province.

Dewapriya was in the 13th place at the provincial council elections which was held in March, 2014 with 26,164 preferential votes. He is to fill the vacancy created by former CM Prasanna Ranathunga.

Dassanayake was the Chairman of the North Western Provincial Council and he was proposed for the post by the Opposition; United National Party. He became the Chairman in March, 2013, defeating the other (Indrani Dassanayake) proposed by his own party (United People’s Freedom Alliance). Dassanayake will fill the vacated seat by Dayasiri Jayasekara.
