The National Photographic Art Society (NPAS) of Sri Lanka held the international exhibition of photography for the 17th time this year. The exhibition was held at the National Art gallery from August 28 to 30. The opening ceremony was held on August 28 and Kalasuri Sathischandra Edirisinghe was the chief guest.

The four categories of the exhibition were open color, monochrome, nature and portraits. The NPAS received photographs from 21 countries and the five judges were Henry Rajakaruna, Bandu Gunaratne, Kanchane Marasinghe, Mithra Weerakone and Archt. Sithumini Rathnamalala. There were 2,000 entries and 138 were selected to be exhibited.

The exhibition chairman for this year was Naradha Amaratunga Arachchi, who said that this year he saw an increase in entries by Sri Lankans which in turn indicates an increase in interest and talent in Sri Lanka.

He also spoke about art photography, explaining that the entries aren’t merely photographs but have an artistic element to them. Naradha Amaratunga Arachchi went on to discuss the evolution in photography, explaining that technological development has led to an inability to distinguish between original photographs and edited photographs. This has led to the merging of categories and the exhibition displayed a mixture of original and edited photographs.
