Kusal Perera celebrates his fifty on Test debut at the SSC grounds on day three of the third Test.

Kusal Perera marked his Test debut with a significant half-century to take Sri Lanka past the follow-on mark against India on the third day of the third and final Test played at the SSC grounds.

Sri Lanka slipped to 47-6 in the face of some testing seam bowling from India’s three-pronged attack of Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav and Stuart Binny replying to India’s first innings of 312 and were in danger of being asked to follow-on.

However despite losing the wicket of Lahiru Thirimanne to the second ball after lunch for nought, Perera and Rangana Herath shared a stubborn stand of 79 to take Sri Lanka past the follow-on score of 113.

At tea Sri Lanka were 175 for eight wickets trailing India by 137 runs.

Perera playing a typical one-day knock slammed nine fours in his 56-ball innings for 55 before miscuing a catch off Sharma to Kohli at mid-off.

He survived a chance at nine when Rahul at second slip dropped him off Yadav and made full use of that lapse to score a fifty on debut.

Following his dismissal Tharindu Kaushal joined Herath in another partnership that produced 29 runs. Kaushal was out for 16 shortly before the tea break falling lbw to Mishra.

Herath continued to defy the Indian bowlers and at tea was unbeaten on 47 off 79 balls (8 fours) with Dhammika Prasad on six.

Prasad was forced to retire hurt with his score on one when he was hit a painful blow on the glove by Sharma but returned to resume his innings at the fall of Kaushal’s wicket at 156.
