An improved gravel track of the Walawa Super Cross Circuit is certain to offer the drivers and riders more enthusiasm to perform at their highest levels and entertain the crowds at the fifth Walawa Super Cross to be held on 13th September. This event is organised by the Sri Lanka Army Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Regiment and conducted by the Sri Lanka Motorcycle Club.
The event was inaugurated in 2011 by the then Commandant of the Regiment Major General Lalith Wijetunga with the sole intention of finding extra funds for the welfare of the families of soldiers who sacrificed their lives while saving the sovereignty of the country, soldiers who are disabled and for present soldiers of the Regiment.
He said that the Walawa Super Cross became a success in 2011 with the support extended by Major General Ravi Mayadunne, Lt. Colonel Indu Samarakoon and Lt Colonel Duminda Jayasinghe. The others who spent their valuable time in constructing this Super Cross Circuit with a scenic beauty are veterans in Motor Sports like Sanjeeva de Mel and Indika Gurusinghe too should be commended for their unstinted support. The track which measures up to 1-7 kilometres for cars and 1-2 kilometre motorcycle track with a breath of 30 metres will definitely serve the participants to achieve great heights.
All past champion drivers and riders have consented to participate along with a few foreign riders who have raced here before. The young drivers and riders who have made progress at the events conducted this year at other events that has taken place in past few months, will pose a threat to champion drivers and riders here.
The Sri Lanka Motor Cycle Club will play a big role on this day in conducting 26 events (cars and bikes). There will be two motorcycle events for 10 and 13 years olds too.
