Kandy is to get a flip up from two top sportsmen from Royalist, Malik Samarawickrema and Lakshman Kiriella who have come forward to liberate sportsman’s and women’s untold hardship and difficulties with good facilities to develop sports. The cornerstones of this policy are to increase productivity, to develop effective distribution systems and to create good facilities. Kandy has produced some of the top sportsmen and women in every field with limited facilities. Today Kandy does not have a proper place for any sports to do their training expect for rugby.
To develop team sports, to train and prove the capability to fight and work together as a team. Sports have been also a useful way for people to increase their mastery of nature and the environment. For that facilities are important. Many sports promoters have come and gone, without exception all these promoters proclaimed that sports development was their priority.
Rugby has became huge after Malik Samarawickrema came to Kandy, together with Lakshman Kiriella are planning to start a new system by providing the much needed facilities. It’s one thing to have a great team. It’s another thing for that team to play in top-class facilities and host competitions that bring in people from around the city or even the country. For sports to improve and procure top people much needs to be done.
Kandy needs a multi-purpose stadium, designed to be easily used for multiple events. We need floodlights, artificial turf pitches, outdoor grass pitches, specially for football, hockey, rugger, multi-use games area (tennis, basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, netball, sprint track), free weights area, squash courts, swimming pool, changing rooms and showers. Conference and meeting facilities and free car park. For cricket there is an International Stadium at Pallekelle, so, let’s hope these two sports promoters will meet their promises.
Malik Samarawickrema, was a top class scrum half who played for Royal College in the late 1960’s along with players like H.C.P. Malwatte, C.R. de Silva, Jagath Fernando, A.J. Yusuf, Fred Perera, R.G.M. de Silva, P.S.W. Kannangara, I.F.W. Jayawardene, to name a few under Summa Navaratnam as coach. Later played for CR and FC and the country and was a live wire of the Longden Place club. he was also the Sri Lanka team Manager, Treasurer and President of the SLRFU. It was in the early 1990’s that he crossed over to Kandy.
Lakshman Kiriella former Royal College, Law College and Kandy Law Association sportsman, has also assured to lend a big hand to uplift the standard of sports in Kandy District.
It was Kiriella as the Sports Minister to have started work on the Pallekelle International Cricket Stadium Kandy has the proud record of having produced some of the greatest sportsmen in years gone by. The authorities should continue the good work so that the Kandy sportsmen and sportswomen will benefit.
