Responding to allegations made by Colombo Telegraph that he cheated at an exam while an undergraduate at the University of Peradeniya, President’s Counsel Dr Jayampathy Wickremeratne categorically stated that while he doesn’t deny the allegation, he has since ‘moved on and redeemed’ himself in the wake of scholarship and academic work.

He further said that after he was sacked by the University for his act, he entered the Department of Political Science at Peradeniya in 1986 and obtained his PhD, five years later, adding that his thesis, ‘Fundamental Rights in Sri Lanka’, has become a standard text used by universities throughout the country. It is currently in its second edition.
When queried as to the timing of the allegation leveled against him, Dr Wickremeratne declined to comment. “It’s all done and dusted,” he said, referring to the allegation, “As such I don’t think it’s a permanent scar on me, given that I have moved on since.”
