So many times we cross oceans and we look back and wonder how we made it through without sinking or being carried away by the storm; we climb mountains and look down and see how many steps we have covered and we trudge through a long journey and still wonder how we made it that far. The truth is that within an individual lies a great hero which might be unknown to each one of us. Bob Riley said, “Hard times don’t create heroes. It is during the hard times when the ‘hero’ within us is revealed.”
It doesn’t matter how many times you fall, there is always examination time and the time to receive results. No man can enter the next chapter of his life without going through a trial. The fact that you are falling and rising again shows that there is a resilience power in you that keeps saying, “I can fight this”, and even if things seem topsy-turvy each time you are trying to make it right, don’t give in to your fear because it will not allow you to cope with your current situation. Just embrace your brokenness and weakness because that is what makes you human.
It is a natural phenomenon to face some situations beyond individual understanding at a point in life. There are times when it seems that there is no answer anywhere, you have to wait tirelessly for a miracle to occur and your life is fill with questions like why, how, what and when and so on. Don’t be afraid to take a step, no matter how much sorrow is trying to overtake you, you can find love if you search within yourself.
Whenever you are lost and can’t find the meaning of your existence in life, just look at your mirror, because the real meaning lies in who you are looking at in your mirror. Christopher Reeve said, “I think a hero is an ordinary individual who finds strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” It doesn’t mean that your prayers have not been answered even if there is no proof that anyone heard your cry.
Although it may be hard to bear, there can be a miracle when you believe that there is a ray of hope at the end if the tunnel. Face your problem squarely the way you face life and focus on the lesson you learn not the pains you see, for each day has its own blessing and lesson, it does not mean that the pain is not there or the scar has completely healed but you can find the strength inside you because the hero lies in you.
Your story shouldn’t end when troubles start, but start your story is when problem arise. Many great achievers had countless of obstacles in their lives but they welcomed the obstacle and battled with it till they won. Your story too can change people’s life. Mary McCarthy said, “We all live in suspense from day to day; in other words, you are the hero of your own story.” Look for strength within you to carry on and move forward no matter what life throws at you. The wise man says uneasy lies the head that wears the crown, which means that you have great responsibilities in your life and if you can’t find yourself nobody will find you.
Strengthen yourself first and the ability to strengthen others will emerge. I love it when Louise Erdrich beautifully quote that, “Life will break you. Nobody can protect you from that, and living alone won’t either, for solitude will also break you with its yearning. You have to love. You have to feel. It is the reason you are here on earth. You are here to risk your heart.
You are here to be swallowed up. And when it happens that you are broken, or betrayed, or left, or hurt, or death brushes near, let yourself sit by an apple tree and listen to the apples falling all around you in heaps, wasting their sweetness. Tell yourself you tasted as many as you could.”
At a point in life we don’t know how strong someone can be until the option left is being strong itself. The ability of a man can only be measured by how he conquers all obstacles in his way without weary or forfeit or letting go of his dreams. There is a power in you and if you look deeply, you will find it. It’s not a bad thing to look for heroes in other people but there is a great hero lying inside of you that is waiting for you to wake him up. Remember, “If you are not the hero of your own story, then you’re missing the whole point of your humanity” (Steve Maraboli)
