It was a star-studded evening indeed with a large gathering of celebrities, high officials and media personnel at the Derana – Close up music video awards 2014, held at the Youth Centre, Maharagama. The event started off with performance by artistes, who were nominated for various categories, on a stunning stage which was a major attraction, adorned by record tapes and camera reels, also showing the hard work done by the organizers of the event to make it become a success. The whole event was to keep the audience thoroughly interested and entertained, and not to mention the two amazing comperes, Lahiru Perera and Saranga Disasekara who, with their excellent and lively compeering, and unexpected mishaps sent the audience into fits of laughter, making the audience wonder what was going to happen next. The judging panel would have had a difficult time trying to select the winners, because of their superb talent. The judging panel included experts in music, advertising and media sector, who would have had a difficult time in selecting the best out of many talented artistes. This certainly seems to be a good sign that Sri Lanka has got many talented up-and- coming artistes who will be able to get some good experience from this event and showcase their talents even more in future. It was an emotional, but a special moment when Sunil Perera came up on stage to receive his award for the song, ‘Koththamalli’ which was also performed on stage with a colorful dance item. According to Sunil, it was the first award that he received after 45 years. He had a good piece of advice for the young artistes, who wanted to make a name in the industry, by saying to do their best, not just to expect awards, and become successful gradually.
There were three award categories such as Gold, Silver and Bronze, and Dimuthu Kalinga was able to bag several awards for his song , Nil Ahasata by winning the awards for best editing, art direction and concept in a video , for the best Sri Lankan Rock video and the best actor in a video which was won by Nimmi Harasgama. Best visual and animation award was won by Madhuka Gunasekara and Chamishka Gamage for ‘Lassana daasaak’ by Bn’S, Best Sri Lankan Hip Hop video by Drill Team ft Sanuka Wickramasinghe for Deviyange Bare. The award for best Cinematography was won by Hasitha Warnasooriya for Deviyange Baare, Best dance video by two nominees, Wayo for api sanasille, and Prajeev, Pratheep Varun ft Krishan for Boottu Paattu, Best alternative video by Senuri Weerawarna for ‘Sihina Paradeesaye’ best Sri Lankan Reggae video by Raashi, for api mara, best rap performance for Deviyange Bare by Drill team, best Sri Lankan pop video again won by two nominees , Sunil Perera and Gypsies for Koththamalli, La Signore for Kassata kos ata.
Ruwan Hettiarachchi and Sheril were selected as the Close Up most confident couple , while the best overall act by a singer or a group – male was won by Romesh Sugathapala for ‘Bala innam’. Best overall act by a singer or a group – female was won by Raini Charuka for Chanchala Daase and Omee Ranasinghe ft. Yureni Noshika bagged the award for New artiste of the year. After a huge contest the Most popular music video 2014 – Gold was won by Pradeep Rangana , while the silver and bronze categories were won by Ruwan Hettiarachchi and Theekshana Anuradha respectively.
Dimuthu Kalinga, who won the best award for the best award for the best Sri Lankan Rock video ‘Nil Ahasata’Chandima Rodrigo, whose team won the best Sri Lankan Reggae video for Api api mara. by adding a little touch of Rock to the song as well. Chandima describes it as teamwork ‘’we were working on a song when we heard about this incident in Dharga town,’’ he says. ‘’Eventually it enabled us to create a song and give the message to the people, to live in harmony and not to fight. We had only one guitar when we started. It was a lot of hard work for sure. We never expected to win an award for this but we are glad we achieved something for our hard work. We also added a bit of Rock and also discussed about doing the video by talking to civilians and travelling to rural places. ‘’ Being a very simple and a ‘’serious’’ person, also a music and an English teacher by profession, he says he wants to take it to the International level, not only in Sri Lanka.
Interesting and animated discussions, highlighting up- and-coming artistes, exchanging pleasantries, fun and entertainment, amazing moments with Sri Lanka’s most renowned celebrities , high hopes and aspirations, and a moment to remember was what the Derana- Close up music awards 2014 had in store this time.
