The United National Party (UNP) announced today that both major parties of the country; United National Party and Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) finally reached an agreement to form a national government for two years. UNP Chairman Malik Samarawickrama in a media statement said that an agreement had been reached after extensive and cordial discussions with the SLFP.

“The exercise and effort of both parties are to serve the people by moving away from the traditional political culture and ensuring the betterment of the nation without considering ministerial portfolios and perks associated with them,” the Chairman said.

Accordingly, new Cabinet of Ministers will take oaths on September 02 and Samarawickrama added that 30 ministries initially entrusted among the UNP and SLFP parliamentarians as the ministers. He also opined that the number will be increased with the approval of the Parliament on Sep 03 and 04.
