Former Deputy Minister Sarana Gunawardena and four others who were arrested in connection with an alleged assault of an individual, have been remanded in custody by the Gampaha Magistrate’s Court until August 26.

The former deputy minister and other suspects were asked to present themselves to the Gampaha police station as part of an investigation into a complaint regarding an assault.

Police said the complaint, which was in relation to an election violence incident, had been made regarding an alleged assault of an individual in Gampaha town on August 14.

The five suspects were arrested after presenting themselves to the Gampaha police station.
