Nimesh Perera and Nimesh Fernando guided Asia Asset Finance to their first MCA cricket title, when they beat Brandix Essentials “B” by 27 runs, in the 5th Stafford Motor Co. Ltd., sponsored, “Honda” Trophy, MCA “G” division 25-over League tournament final, concluded at the MCA grounds on 15th August.
Sent in to bat, Asia Asset openers Nimesh Fernando and Sashrika Pussegolla put on a steady start putting on 45 runs in nine overs.
With their departure, Nimesh Perera played an aggressive role scoring 59 runs in 38 deliveries inclusive of two sixes and seven fours to steer Asia Asset to a respectable 163 runs.
Chasing 164 runs to win in 25 overs, Brandix got off to a disastrous start. Only number three batsman Ruchira Perera batted with authority to score an unbeaten 74 runs with five sixes and five fours. The rest of the batsmen succumbed easily to the spin bowling of Nimesh Fernando who ripped through to finish with five wickets for 23 runs and were shot out for 136 runs.
Nimesh Fernando of Asia Asset Finance was named man of the match for his superb bowling feat.
The other three special awards, based on performances in the league and knock-out stages went to Deutsche Bank’s fast bowler Praveen Fernando (10 matches, 42.2 overs 159 runs, 22 wickets); LB Finance’s prolific batsman, Pathum Madushanka (8 innings, 541 runs, including 215 & 3 half centuries) & Shashrika Pussegolla, Man of the Tournament. (407 runs & 10 wickets).
