Reports indicate that veteran United National Party (UNP) politician, Karu Jayasuriya is likely to be the next Speaker of Parliament.

Jayasuriya did not contest the August 17 general election. However, he was confirmed as an MP on Friday through the UNP’s National List.

While a final decision on the Speaker is yet to be taken, Jayasuriya’s name is said to be the one that the UNP will put forward as its nominee for the Speaker.

With the UNP signing an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Sri Lanka Freedom Party on forming a National Government, Jayasuriya’s name is also unlikely to meet with opposition and he is expected to be installed as Speaker uncontested when the new Parliament convenes on September 1.
