Winners had to be decided on the superior tie break scores at the National Amateur men and women’s Open Chess Championship held at the Buddhist Ladies International College, Colombo 7 from 5th to 9th August.

This was the second consecutive year the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka organized this event.

Both tournaments were for 9 rounds swiss FIDE Open event with 143 men players and 53 women players participated.

Two players tied for the first place in open men’s event with 7.5/9 points each, W.A.T.S. Gubasinghe and Thisura Munasinghe.

However W.A.T.S. Gunaisnghe achieved the championship on a superior tie break score. Randil Lakshitha became the second runner-up with 7.9 points.

Two players tied for the first place in the women’s event at 7.5 points each, Roshell Nathasha and WCM K.K.M. Sachintha Kodikara. However Roshell Nathasha achieved the championship on a superior tie break score. H.H.M. Janandani Abeysinghe became the second runner-up with 6.5 points.
