I read a letter sent by you to the former President four days prior to the general elections. This letter is contrary to the “policy of neutrality” you said you would adopt regarding the general election. After the “grave digging tactic” failed, I believe this to be the next logical recourse. Kudos, on effortlessly working for the defeat of your own party. I am somewhat disappointed that you are not also appointed the next UNP Party leader, then again Ranil the Party Leader of the UNP for the past 21 years is unlikely to relinquish party leadership in the manner in which of a certain someone.

I for one pray and hope for the victory of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party led UPFA. Personally, it does not matter whether or not the man who shall remain unnamed becomes the next Premier. To me he is the man who is shouldering the burden of responsibility for a SLFP led UPFA victory. To me he is the man who has a remote chance of defeating UNP + TNA Secessionist Communalist Federalist agenda. I believe your “impartiality” is beyond reproach, so much so that such infinitesimal details go unnoticed.
You mention a handful of SLFP office bearers who held office during the times of SWRD Banadaranaike. I believe your intended intent was to indirectly say SWRD was not a communalist or a racist or better yet a much vilified “Sinhala Nationalist”. Following excerpts from the Communal Politics under the Donoughmore Constitution 1931-1947 by Jane Russell paints SWRD in a different light from the one you tried to paint him in:
“ In January 1939 at a meeting in Balapitiya Bandaranaike appealed to the electors in vein:
I am prepared to sacrifice my life for sake of my community, the Sinhalese. If anybody were to try to hinder our progress, I am determined to see that he is taught a lesson he will never forget.
At the conclusion of the meeting, a lady in the audience, Mrs. Srimathie Abeygunawardene likened Bandaranaike to Hitler and appealed to the Sinhalese community to give every possible assurance to reach the goal of freedom. This reported remark caused GG Ponnambalam to term Bandaranaike “the pocket fuehrer”. “
“The Nawalapitiya Incident is a prime example of this : Ponnambalam’s remark in his address to the Young Men’s Muslim Association in Nawalapitiya in 1939 that Sinhalese “were a race of hybrids” provoked such a reaction that Bandaranaike was able to establish a branch of the Sinhala Maha Sabha there the following month. Bandaranaike said at the inaugural meeting:
The Nawalapitiya Sinhala Maha Sabha should erect a statue of Ponnambalam as we should be grateful to him for provoking the formation of this Sinhala Maha Sabha.
His speech was more than a thoughtless insult, it was an attempt to prove that the Tamils had the chief claim to Ceylon. The large part of the Sinhalese history had been created in their fight against the Tamils.
He said at the annual Sinhala Maha Sabha Congress:
Though we still have enemies like the supporters of Mr. Ponnambalam. they do us more good than harm. “
SWRD Bandaranaike, in Wesak message in 1937, said this:
“The day on which Buddha was born, attained enlightenment and passed away is not only a sacred to all Buddhists generally, but has a special significance for the Sinhala race, because on the Wesak Full moon as the Buddha breathed his last, that race was founded by the landing of Wijaya in Sri Lanka.”
Mr. Chairman, I believe that the following excerpts are enough to convince you that SWRD Bandaranaike the founding father of your beloved party was a Sinhala Nationalist. The evil Madamulana, merely followed in the footsteps of founder of your party. He did not invent “Sinhala Nationalism” nor was he coerced to embrace “Sinhala Nationalism”. Having passed an era where a certain Madame President was writing love letters to her beloved terrorist leader, it is refreshing to have the incumbent President write a letter of “love” to the former President who cruelly assassinated that same terrorist leader. Thus ending the epic saga of love.
Your ability to listen to others of differing opinions and your notion of democracy will forever reign supreme. In your letter you go on to name seven (7) party seniors who are suitable for the post Prime Minister, two of whom you gave marching orders after the lapse of 18 odd hours. In the days to come you handed pink slips to officials and members alike not to inaugurate a herd of sycophants, but due to your undying love for the blue party.
It is indisputable the tireless and sleepless effort you made to ensure your home district is won by your treasured party. It comes a close second to the manner in which Whiskey Madame ensured the victory of her home district of Gampaha. Without you two; the democratic Greats, this victory would have not been possible. You and the former Madame have in every way imaginable marshalled forces to ensure that “beast” lay defeated. As such both you and Madame will go down in history as true leaders who have had best interests of party and in extension country at heart.
I do not know if it is through willful ignorance, mere disregard or sheer stupidity or greed of votes that you have forgotten that the progenitor of your beloved party was a Sinhala Nationalist. I wish all best to you in learning the true history of your cherished party. May you be blessed with the courage to follow in the mighty footsteps in your much adored founder. May the triple gem bless you!
