Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa today said he would continue to engage in politics and would function as a Member of Parliament.

Issuing a statement, the former President said he accepted ‘with humility’ the result of the parliamentary election and thanked the voters who placed their confidence in the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) ‘despite the unprecedented obstacles we had to face’. He further extended his thanks to all the activists and people’s representatives who worked in the election campaign on behalf of the UPFA.

He concluded the statement adding “I will continue to engage in politics in keeping with the people’s mandate and I will function within parliament to safeguard the nation and the democratic system.”
