Election Monitoring groups have observed that some candidates who contested yesterday’s election have distributed free liquor in several districts. According to CaFFE Director General Keerthi Thennakoon liquor distribution had taken place in Badulla, Puttalam, Nuwara Eliya, Kurunegala and Matale.

In Passara, two persons have been arrested as they had distributed liquor for 67 persons asking preferential votes for a candidate from the Ceylon Workers Congress.  Meanwhile, a group who came in two vehicles to Laggala, Nagollaliyadda and Kosgolla areas in Matale has distributed liquor and cash.

However, the CaFFE says that Police have failed in arresting the suspects even after giving information over the violation of election law. They said that the vehicle numbers are PE-9129 and KJ-7899. Another vehicle numbered 54-6050 has distributed free liquor in Pudalu Oya area in Nuwara-Eliya.
