Voting at the 2015 General Election concluded at 4.00pm today. No major incidents were reported and the election was held in a largely peaceful atmosphere, according to election observers.
However, several persons have been arrested by police for violating election laws in various parts of the island. A high voter turnout was reported from most parts of the island, with well over 65% of registered voters exercising their franchise.
Approximate voter turnout as at conclusion of polling at 4.00pm: Matale 65%, Puttalam 65%, Kegalle 75%, Anuradhapura 70%, Trincomalee 75%, Galle 70%, Kandy 70%, Gampaha 70%, Ampara 65%, Nuwara Eliya 70%.
Counting of postal votes has already begun. The Department of Elections expects to issue the first postal vote result by midnight today.
