Six persons were arrested by police for election law violations during the period from 7.00am to 12.00pm today. The arrests were reported from Kuliyapitiya, Vavuniya, Maligawatta and Katunayake.

In Kuliyapitiya, a supporter of a United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) candidate was arrested by a police mobile patrol unit while distributing cardboard cards containing the candidate’s preference number on the road near a polling station.  Police also recovered 434 cardboard cards containing the candidate’s preference number. He was produced before the Kuliyapitiya Magistrate’s Court where he was remanded in custody till August 25.

In Vaithyakulam, Vavuniya, police on mobile patrol arrested two persons who were scattering on the road cards containing photographs and preference numbers of two UPFA candidates. A motorbike and 220 cards of the candidates were taken into police custody along with the suspects. The suspects are due to be produced before the Vavuniya Magistrate.

In Maligawatta, Colombo, two persons on a three-wheeler were taken into custody while distributing cards containing the photograph and preference number of a UPFA candidate. The three-wheeler and 810 such cards which were in the suspects’ possession were taken into police custody. They were produced before Aluthkade No.02 Magistrate’s Court and released on personal bonds of Rs.500,000 each. The case is due to be taken up again on August 25.

Police in Katunayake arrested a motorcyclist who was scattering cards containing the preference number of a United National Party (UNP) candidate. A motorbike and 216 cards of the candidate were taken into suspects. The suspect is due to be produced before the Minuwangoda Magistrate.
