Shipping experts have called for capacity expansions of the Colombo Port in order to capture a part of the container cargo market business of the world’s second largest container port in Singapore.

Commercial and Marketing General Manager, Colombo International Container Terminals Ltd (CICT) Tissa Wickramasinghe speaking at the annual General Meeting of Sri Lanka Shippers’ Council said that the Colombo port had seen a 6 percent growth up to last month this year, “while the Port of Singapore up to last month had a 2.5 percent drop in volume. So we have got new business coming in.”

He pointed out that this was due to Sri Lanka’s additional capacity to be able to handle ‘ultra large carriers’ which global shipping lines are opting to construct and operate now.
