The Army report in response to Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL)’s report regarding the Rathupaswala incident is ‘still having final touches’ said Director Media Sri Lanka Army Brigadier Jayanath Jayaweera. However, the report which was originally due some weeks ago is not yet complete.
“At the moment the Commander is preparing the relevant documents,” said Jayaweera.
He did not provide any certain day as to when the report would be released. Speaking to The Nation, last week Jayaweera said, “Most probably the report will be released on Friday (14) evening. We should be able to release the report within the day.”
It was in January that the Human Rights Commission handed over its final report into the incident to President Maithripala Sirisena. According to the report prepared by the commission the Army was held responsible for the deaths of three and injuries to 36 people.
HRCSL in their report has provided recommendations to take disciplinary action against the commanding officers, chief officers and officers of the Army who participated in dispersing the protests.
