Ravichandran Ashwin destroyed the Sri Lanka batting with six wickets on his first Test appearance against the country.

GALLE: Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took his 11th five-for in an innings haul in his first appearance in a Test against Sri Lanka to dismiss the home side for 183 by tea on the opening day of the first Test at Galle International Stadium.

Ashwin ended with figures of six for 46 and along with leg-spinner Amit Mishra who took two for 20 completely bamboozled the Lankan batsmen into submission on a turning pitch.

Sri Lanka lost their last five wickets for 44 runs off 50 balls in the afternoon session after their top five had collapsed for 65 runs in the morning.

Sri Lanka would have been out for a much smaller total than what they achieved had it not been for a defiant 79-run stand between skipper Angelo Mathews (64) and Dinesh Chandimal (59).

Just when the partnership looked like flourishing India once again broke through as they had in the morning session and it was only a matter of time before they wrapped up the Lankan innings.

Mathews’ 64 off 92 balls comprised a six and six fours and Chandimal’s knock of 59 off 77 balls comprised nine fours.

Rangana Herath played a cameo innings of 23 off 24 balls before he was finally out to Ashwin providing the bowler with his sixth wicket.

Scores: Sri Lanka 183 (Angelo Mathews 64, Dinesh Chandimal 59, Rangana Herath 28, Ravichandran Ashwin 6/46, Amit Mishra 2/20) v India.
