A total of 70,549 Police officers will be deployed for election duty for the upcoming general election, the Police Department reveals. Speaking to the media Police Spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunasekara said an additional 4,825 Special Task Officers will also be deployed to provide security to road blocks, counting centers and mobile patrol units.
“Two police officers each will be present at the 12,399 polling stations island wide” he said adding that the officers will report to duty on August 16. 2885 police mobile units will also be deployed during the election period he said. According to ASP Gunasekara 161 riot police squads will to be deployed in certain areas of the country in order to maintain peace and order while a total of 221 road blocks too will be in place during the time.
