Sri Lanka will send 8 male and 3 female athletes for the World Masters Athletic Championship to be held in Lyon, France 4th to 16th August. Team comprises captain Jude Siriwardena while the acting manager is Kinsley Munaweera (Asst. secretary MASL) as team manager. HA Upali (Vice president) and co-manager Senani Bogahawatte (Gen Secretary MASL) will arrive in Lyon after the opening ceremony due to family commitments.

At the last WMA championships held in Porto Alegre 2013 in Brazil, Lalana Irangani won a silver medal in the 200m in the W35 group. She is running in W40 group this time and she has a very good chance of winning a medal in Lyon. Hurdler HSP Silva missed the last championships and his time at the National Championships this year was better than the winning time in Brazil. Ajanthan Mahalingam would have secured a silver in Brazil according to his time at the Army volunteer meet held in July.

Meanwhile, PHD Waidyatilaka who has the distinction of being the only International Technical Official in the world for all three main Athletics bodies, namely International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and World Masters Athletics (WMA) has been appointed as an ITO for the forthcoming WMA championships in Lyon, France.

He will also represent Sri Lanka at the Asian Regional meeting on 8 Aug. and the General Assembly of The WMA which will be held on 13 Aug.
