Addressing the media on August 7, Media Secretary to Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka, Dhanushka Ramanayake and Executive Committee Member of the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) Anuruddha Pradeep Karnasuriya lambasted a statement by a certain media outlet (which quoted Pivithura Hela Urumaya leader Udaya Gammanpila) that the Minister had spent 140 million rupees on his election campaign, saying that while they hadn’t heard or seen Gammanpila personally making the statement, the outlet had carried the news item in a false and misleading manner which is “at odds with the actual campaign of Minister Ranawaka”.

Both Ramanayake and Karnasuriya commented on the outlet’s carrying yet another item stating that Minister Ranawaka had gifted members of various news organizations with doughnuts. While conceding that they had indeed gifted them on the Minister’s 50th birthday, Ramanayake stated that legal action would be taken in the coming weeks (after clarifying matters) against relevant persons for spreading malicious rumors about their election campaign. The duo added that a team of lawyers are studying the case and within a period of seven days they will definitely go before the courts for legal action.”
As a final note, the two of them advised the media to not “use the pen to mislead and misinform the people.”
