The high flying Colombo FC, the Cargills FA Cup Champions, had to face a tough task before beating Matara City Football Club 1-nil at the City Football Complex over the weekend. This victory was made possible mainly due to the fine display from the African players who have strengthened the team.
The Colombo FC also had contracted the former Blue Star skipper Mohamed Rameez. His combination with the defence line gave the edge for the Colombo team.
The scores were nil-all at lemons.Colombo FC scored the winning goal at the final stages of the game thus registering their second consecutive win in this tournament.
Java Lane down Sailors 2-0
Java Lane SC who lost their first game a week ago, combined well to make a strong comeback when they defeated Navy 2/0 at City League ground on 1st August. S.M. Perera opened the scoring in the 18th minute to make it 1-0. They held on to this lead until halftime.
After the break they went on the attack but failed to find the net on many occasions. With only four minutes left for the final whistle it was A.M. Afam who struck the much needed goal which sealed a good win for the Slave Island Club.
Pelicans shock Renown 1/0
Pelicans SC Kurunegala playing on their home soil with a young outfit played well to outplay the much fancied Renown SC from Colombo by 1 goal to 0. At half time it was nil-all.
Young striker K.P.K. Pradeep scored in the 86th minute to see his team win a crucial game in front of their home crowd.
Nandimithra beat Police 1-0
Strong Police outfit went down to Nandimithra SC 1-0. A goal by S.L. Gayashan during injury time of the first half, helped Nandimithra SC take a 1-0 at the half time.
The Police strikers went on the attack during the whole of second session but failed to find the net and had to return as losers in their second outing.
Police team made a real impact in their opening game defeating last year’s Dialog League Champs Solid SC last week.
Negombo Youth rout Thihariya Youth 3-1
Negombo Youth SC got off to flying start scoring three quick goals in their game against Thihariya Youth SC to record a good 3-1 win. These goals were scored by K.D.H. Pieris (24), former National team striker Kasun Jayasuriya (26) and R.P. Fernando (44). Lemons were taken with the same score.
Coming back after the break Thihariya Youth players combined well and were seen penetrating the defence line of NYSC but failed to find the target. Negombo Youth players had to defend more than going on the attack to hold on to their lead.
Thihariya Youth’s efforts brought success only in the 58th minute when M.N. Ishan found the net to reduce the lead to two points.
Army beat Saunders 1-0
Army who faced the Price Park Club Saunders SC at the Moragasmulla ground at Rajagiriya, managed to register a 1-0 win. During the first session of play both teams played their best and had to take lemons without scoring.
The second half too was evenly contested for almost 13 minutes and it was N. Jayathunga who managed to put the soldiers in front scoring the only goal of the match.
Air Force beat Highlanders 2-0 at Katunayaka.
Don Bosko beat Kalutara Park SC 1-0.
Super Sun SC beat New Youngs SC 3-0.
Crystal Palace FC beat Up Country Lions 2-0.
