A suspect was arrested and 14,986 illegal handbills belonging to a United National Party (UNP) candidate were recovered after police raided a shop in Kantale this morning.
Police Media Unit said the raid was conducted on information received by the Trincomalee Assistant Elections Commissioner that fake 2015 General Election ballot papers were being kept at a shop located at Clock Tower junction in Trincomalee. The Assistant Elections Commissioner had notified the OIC of the Kantale police about this information and the raid had been conducted based on subsequent investigations.
Accordingly, officers had raided a shop being rented by a Trincomalee District UNP candidate contesting the upcoming election, where they found the stock of illegal handbills and arrested the suspect.
The suspect is due to be produced before the Kantale Magistrate today. Kantale police are investigating.
