Two suspects have been arrested by police for allegedly attempting to assault the Batticaloa District Assistant Elections Commissioner.
Police identified the two suspects as former Kaththankudi Mayor Shahul Hameed Azwer and former Eastern Provincial Councilor Mohammed Fareed.
The incident occurred on August 4 (Tuesday) when the Assistant Elections Commissioner had visited a cultural center in Kaththankudi upon receiving information that a United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) candidate was conducting an illegal election propaganda campaign.
However, several persons who were present at the location had obstructed the commissioner for carrying out his duties and had tried to assault him. Thereafter, he had lodged a complaint with the Kaththankudi police.
Acting on this complaint, police arrested the two suspects at around 4.05 this morning. They are due to be produced before the Batticaloa Magistrate’s Court today. Kaththankudi police are investigating.
