Former Deputy Minister and United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Parliamentarian Lakshman Wasantha Perera has been arrested by police this morning.

Perera was taken into custody after surrendering to the Matale police. According to Police Media Unit said Perera was arrested in connection with a complaint regarding an incident that occurred on July 26, where a supporter of a political party was allegedly abducted and assaulted.

Four suspects who were wanted in connection with the incident had earlier been arrested and remanded till August 12, when they are scheduled to be produced for an identification parade.

Former MP Lakshman Wasantha Perera had been wanted for allegedly encouraging the abduction and assault of the victim. He is due to be produced before the Matale Magistrate’s Court today.
