NEW DELHI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India on Tuesday announced the much-anticipated venues for the ICC World Twenty20 2016. The ICC event, which will be held from March 11 to April 3, will be conducted across eight cities including Bengaluru, Chennai, Dharamshala, Mohali, Mumbai, Nagpur and New Delhi. Kolkata’s Eden Gardens, the oldest cricketing venue in the country, will host the final.
These venues will host the matches subject to fulfilling the prescribed requirements of the ICC and BCCI while adhering to the statutory obligations that are mandatory for hosting an International match. Of all the eight venues, the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala seems to have grown in stature, whereas the Eden Gardens has always been an active option for big matches.
The scenic stadium, located in the stunning backdrop of the Himalayas has already hosted a couple of ODIs – the fifth ODI between India and England in early 2013 and the fourth ODI between India and West Indies in October 2014 – along with a handful of IPL matches. The venue will also stage one of the three the T20 internationals to be played between South Africa and India in October-November. The date though, is yet to be announced.
Speaking on the announcement of the venues, honorary secretary of the BCCI, Anurag Thakur said: “BCCI is extremely proud to host this prestigious event. All the venues identified have hosted many prestigious matches. With this announcement, we have begun our preparations in right earnest. We want this World Twenty20 to be a memorable experience for our participants and fans. I am confident that all the venues nominated will deliver a world class event.” – [TNN]
