The Old Royalists Athletic Club (ORAC) that has been working towards the development of athletics at the College, has come up with a new concept to keep the sport alive. They have invited three boys schools and four girls schools to participate in their inaugural ORAC Quadrangular Athletic Championships to be held on 1st August at the College cricket ground at Reid Avenue.
This quadrangular meet will also push the talented athletes, being an Olympic discipline, to display their skills and reach recognition for possible selection to national level. They are bound to perform under the watchful eyes of the officials from the Athletic Association of Sri Lanka (AASL) who will be keen to pick them and nurture them for the future.
This event will be an annual ‘blue riband’ championship of the College. This will enhance the passion of young athletes at school level to set their mark and pursue in a broader spectrum.
The boys schools invited to compete in this championship will be St. Joseph’s, S. Thomas’ Maris Stella along with Royal while the girls schools will be Bishops, Musaeus, Visakha Vidyalaya and Ladies College. The events will be worked off in Grand Prix style and will be straight final.
Each school has been asked to send only two athletes per event. There will be under-11 upwards and the events to be worked off are; 100m, 400m, 800m, 2500m, long jump, high jump, shot put and the javelin. There will also be a 4x100m relay event.
The overall champions for boys and girls will be presented with the ORAC challenge shield and champions in each age group will also be presented with attractive trophies.
Summa Navaratnam will be the chief guest at the occasion.
This inaugural championship is sponsored by Pan Asia Bank, George Steuart Bio Lab, Keells Foods, MTD Walkers, Singer Sri Lanka, Mobitel, Swastha Realtors and Unilevers-lifebouy.The days’ events will begin at 8.30 a.m. with the lighting of the Olympic torch. (TBR)
