NEW DELHI: The Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) on Thursday announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming Sri Lanka tour. Considering the spinner friendly pitches in Sri Lanka, the Indian selectors opted for a strong spin department, and gave Amit Mishra a surprise nod.
As expected a full-strength team was selected by the Sandip Patil-led selection committee, which met in Delhi, with Virat Kohli as the captain of the side. The committee decided to retain majority of the squad that toured Bangladesh for the one-off Test with the exception of unfit Karn Sharma, thus opening the door for Mishra.
Lokesh Rahul, who withdrew from the Bangladesh tour due to dengue fever kept his place in the squad.
Mishra, 32, is making a comeback into the Indian squad after four years. He, along with Ravichandran Ashwin and Harbhajan Singh, form a formidable spin attack. But for many, the classical leg-break bowler’s return will not be a surprise. His return will be seen purely on merit, in the backdrop of his tireless and impressive outing in recent domestic outings, including the Indian Premier League.
Karn Sharma was not considered as the youngster is still recuperating from injury. And as expected, unfit fast bowler Mohammed Shami’s name was also not considered. He missed the Bangladesh and Zimbabwe ODI series.
India will tour Sri Lanka after a gap of three years to play a three-match Test series, starting at Galle (August 12-16), P Sara Oval (August 20-24) and SSC (August 28 to September 1).
