The inaugural rally of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) for the General Elections – 2015 was held in Anuradhapura on Friday evening under the leadership of former President and chairman of the party’s election committee Mahinda Rajapaksa. The event was attended by stalwarts of the UPFA and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Nimal Siripala De Silva, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, Susil Premajayantha, Dilan Perera, Dinesh Gunawardana along with 106 former parliamentarians and large crowds of party supporters.
Speaking at the rally, former chief justice Sarath N. Silva said the people are now faced with two choices to elect as the Prime Minister. “On one hand, you have Mahinda Rajapaksa who ended the war while on the other hand you have Ranil Wickremesinghe who betrayed this country,” he said adding that therefore the choice is up to the people now.
“We will not stop our fight until Rajapaksa is elected as the Prime Minister,” said General Secretary of the Pivithuru Hela Urumaya, Udaya Gammanpila. He claimed there are no fractions within the party and the full party backing is behind Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The rally was also addressed by former MPs Tissa Vitharana, Vasudeva Nanayakkara and Prabha Ganeshan. At the time of going to press, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa was yet to address the crowds. (Pics by Pradeep Dambarage)
