Former Governor of the Central Bank Arjuna Mahendran, whose resignation was desired by President Maithripala Sirisena and which desire was communicated to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, in a  strange move has stumped the claim of the President through the official website of the Central Bank (

The website carries a picture of Mahendran with the President and the Premier at an event held on July 9, five days before Sirisena said ‘I asked the Prime Minister to get Mahendran to resign’.  Interestingly, the picture appeared and was distributed to the media on July 15, 2015, i.e. a day after the ‘resignation story’ was mentioned by the President and six days after the former Governor, President and Premier met in clearly happy circumstances.  Does the timing tell a story of its own?
