A hospital attendant was killed and five others were injured after an ambulance collided with a lorry parked at the side of the road at Virambugedara in Kurunegala.
Police said the ambulance, belonging to the Batticaloa Teaching Hospital, had been transporting a patient along the Kurnegala-Negombo road when it smashed into the back of a lorry parked at the side of the road at around 3.00am today.
The ambulance driver, the hospital attendant who had been in charge of the patient in the ambulance, two hospital employees, the female patient and a relative of hers who were inside all sustained injuries in the accident and were admitted to the Kurunegala Hospital.
However, the 34-year-old hospital attendant had succumbed to his injuries.
The other five injured persons are still receiving hospital treatment. The lorry driver has been taken into custody. Virambugedara police are investigating.
