President Maithripala Sirisena will address the nation at 5.30pm today where he will make a special statement, the President’s Office stated.

While no details of the statement have been released, it is widely expected that the President will speak on the upcoming General Election.

President Sirisena has come under severe criticism during the past two weeks from many of those who had backed him at January’s Presidential Election. The criticism has been leveled at the President regarding the decision to give former President Mahinda Rajapaksa opportunity to contest the General Election on the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) ticket.
