Former leader of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Somawansa Amarasinghe, said as nomination list of the United National Front for Good Governance (UNFGG) will be finalized by Sunday (July 12) and described it as a ‘third force’ opposed to the policies of both the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) and the United National Party (UNP).
Speaking to The Nation, Amarasinghe further stated that the platform they were on was against the return of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. He said the front was not formed against incumbent President Maithripala Sirisena and that he was welcome to join their alliance as and when the opportune time comes.
However, Amarasinghe emphatically ruled out contesting the General Election under the elephant symbol of the UNP as they were opposed to the policies of both the main parties. “That would be impossible,” he said, when asked if he could contest the election with the UNP.
