Seven suspects  were arrested by police for allegedly engaging in treasure hunting in two separate raids in Gampola and Ragama yesterday.

In the first raid, police arrested four suspected treasure hunters in a raid conducted at Delpitiya in Gampola. A set of digging tools that were in the suspects’ possession were also taken into police custody. The arrested suspects are aged 23, 34, 43 and 72 years. They are residents of Dambulla, Serunuwara and Delpitiya. The suspects were due to be produced before the Gampola Magistrate’s Court today.

In the second incident, acting on a tip-off, Ragama police raided an abandoned house in Meddegoda, Ragama where a group of individuals were allegedly digging for treasure. Three suspects were arrested along with a set of digging tools. The suspects are aged 28, 31 and 36 years and are residents of Ganemulla, Ragama and Ambalangoda. The suspects were due to be produced before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court today.
