Newly appointed Chairman of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (CCC), Samantha Ranatunga says that the chamber should focus on three focal points including the strengthening of the small and medium enterprises (SME) sector.
The new chairman made the observation following his appointment at the CCC’s 176th Annual General Meeting.
In his speech, Ranatunga pointed out that much had been done in terms of developing the ‘hard infrastructure’ and added that focus should be diverted towards the soft aspects of the economy in order to achieve a holistic economic development.
He listed out three sectors on which the chamber could play a major role in developing, namely, regional inclusivity, education and skill development, and strengthen the SME sector.
Meanwhile, the outgoing chairman of the CCC, Suresh Shah in his speech spelt down a 10 point agenda which will be fundamental principles that would be promoted by the chamber. The agenda consisted of the following aspects such as, a market-oriented and private sector led economy, an economy driven by exports, mutually beneficial agreements on trade in goods and services, a strong and thriving SME sector, bridging regional growth disparities through business, attracting quality foreign direct investment, technology advancement and innovation, education and skills development, good governance, policy stability and regulatory quality, and national integration, harmony and inclusiveness.
The AGM also saw the appointments of a Vice Chairperson and a Deputy Vice Chairperson while a nine member ‘Board of Directors’ under the newly ratified rules of the Chamber replaced the ‘Standing Committee A ’. Rajendra Theagarajah, was elected as the Vice Chairperson of the CCC, while Dr. Hans Wijeysuriya was elected as the Deputy Vice Chairperson.
Accordingly, the nine member ‘Board of Directors’ would consist of Samantha Ranatunga, Rajendra Theagarajah and Dr. Hans Wijeysuriya, respectively the Vice Chairperson and Deputy Vice Chairperson of the CCC, Hiran Cooray, Chairperson of the Jetwing Group, Vish Govindasamy, Group Managing Director of Sunshine Holdings PLC, Ms. Sheamlee Wickramasingha, Managing Director of Ceylon Biscuits Limited, Duminda Hulangamuwa, Partner – Head of Tax Services, Ernst and Young, Faizal Salieh, Director of HNB General Insurance and Mangala P.B. Yapa, Secretary General / CEO of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce.
