Nethmi Waduge the lass from Negombo is turning out to be the women’s number one player in Sri Lanka by winning a grand double at the 100th Colombo Tennis Championship in progress at the SLTA clay courts at Sir Marcus Fernando Mawatha.
Waduge first played well to be top seed and favourite and long time women’s number one player in Amritha Muttiah in the women’s Open singles final in straight sets 6/2, 6/4. Waduge played a well composed game and under control all the time. She took the first set comprehensively and found the second set a little tougher with Amritha endeavouring to make a come back, but it was too late.
Later Waduge won the girls under-18 singles title too when she beat Anika Seneviratne who offered stiff challenge in the second set before going down narrowly.
India’s top player and unseeded Ashwin Vijayaragavan found little resistance coming his way from Heera Ashiq of Pakistan in the men’s Open singles final. Ashwin emerged easy winner 6/2, 6/1, 6/1 in the best of five sets final.
The girls’ under-16 title went to eighth seed Anika Seneviratne who beat fifth seed Prabuddhi Perera 6/2, 6/1 in the final.
