Local government officials in Navatkuli have noted that they could not intervene regarding problems faced by Tamil villagers of Navatkuli as the land they were on did not come under them.
Government officials in Navatkuli West when contacted stated that the land belonged to the National Housing and Development Board (NSDB) and therefore, adding that the residents had occupied it illegally.
The officials therefore stated that the residents could not be given deeds unless the NSDB takes an initiative to provide them with the legal documents.
“Until such time, we cannot provide any facilities to these families,” an official on the condition of anonymity said.
The villagers have complained that no one was interested in their plight. They told The Nation that they had many difficulties, with lack of toilet facilities and clean water being the two main issues.
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister, Women’s Affairs, Vijayakala Maheswaran told The Nation that arrangements have been completed for the authorities to provide them with permits. “I personally visited the relevant authorities in the Housing Ministry and got the necessary documents and permits approved. The residents will be provided with the permits before September,” she said.
