An LTTE cadre who was involved in the assassination attempt on President Maithripala Sirisena in 2006, was sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment by the Polonnaruwa High Court on Friday.

Sivaraja Jenivan alias Mohommadu Sulthan Cader Mohideen a.k.a Senan, was charged with setting up a claymore mine in an attempt to assassinate Sirisena, who was then Minister of Mahaweli Development.

The 37-year-old suspect, a resident of the Koviladi area in Jaffna, was taken in to custody while travelling in a bus from Polonnaruwa to Batticaloa in 2006.
