Former Trinity College rugby forward Udaya Balasuriya is the new president of Kandy Sports Club who was elected last Sunday at its annual general meeting that took place at Nittawella.

The club has a proud record in rugby by winning the League and Knock-outs the most number of times while shaping the careers of many who played for Sri Lanka.
Kandy Sports Club (better known as Kandy) is the only A Division rugby playing club outside of Colombo following the dismantling of the Hambantota Sharks and Up Country Lions.

It took Kandy 42 years to win a maiden trophy when in 1992 they won the Clifford Cup thanks to Malik Samarawickrema the man who caused a revolution in the club.
Kandy Sports Club was founded by planters in 1874 and was mainly dominated by the whites.

Later local players from Trinity College, which has by far the greatest, longest and an unparalleled rugby history and tradition, Kingswood College which was the first school to introduce rugby in Sri Lanka, and St. Anthony’s College joined in as a progressive force.
At the meeting Samarawickrema had a high word for the excellent standards and discipline maintained by the players.
He noted that Kandy had won the League on 16 occasions and the Knock-Outs (Clifford Cup) 19 times.
