The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) will submit a report regarding the alleged assault incident against a domestic worker by Supreme Court Justice Sarath De Abrew to the Mount Lavinia Magistrates Court on Tuesday (July 7). The CID is expected to report details of the case to the Mount Lavinia Magistrate seeking a directive from the court for further action. The case was taken over by the CID on June 30.

Speaking to The Nation Police Media Spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunasekara said the CID has recorded a statement from the alleged victim further to the statement made by her to the Mount Lavinia Police.

Meanwhile, the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has written to Chief Justice K. Sripavan asking him to not allow Justice Sarath de Abrew to sit or carry out public functions as a Judge. While not naming him explicitly the letter states the BASL has serious concerns regarding the issue due to the past history of similar conduct by the said judge. Further the BASL has requested the judge should be called upon to relinquish office in the interest of the integrity and reputation of the judiciary.

The complaint by the alleged assault victim claims the Judge had whipped her with a pistol on several occasions.
