Reports say President Maithripala Sirisena has rejected a proposal to give nominations to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) or from the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA).
The decision has been conveyed at the UPFA party leaders meeting. The decision comes after a faction of SLFP MPs who are opposed to giving Rajapaksa nominations exerted strong pressure on the President after earlier indications that the former President will be allowed to contest under the SLFP.
Addressing a large crowd of supporters at his home in Medamulana yesterday, the former President formally announced that he would contest the upcoming General Election. However, Rajapaksa did not specify which part or alliance he would contest from.
